Day 1 Finishes Nine from the Money; Hobson & Cada Lead Field

• Level 10: 400-800, 100 ante
Greg Hobson Leading The Field
Greg Hobson Leading The Field

Another day has been written in the books here at the 2013 World Series of Poker. Today, 1,069 total entrants showed up for Event #4: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em (Six Handed) with the hopes of rising above the field to grasp WSOP glory, the gold bracelet, and the $324,764 first-place prize. After ten full levels it was Greg Hobson who held onto the biggest stack in the room with 160,500 in chips. The next player on Hobson's heels is none other than 2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada who will return for Day 2 with 127,000.

The eliminations came fast and furious today as professional players and amateurs alike sat down for fast-paced six-handed action. As the day progressed, many notable names quickly disappear from play. The likes of Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu, Bill Chen, Lauren Kling Marvin Rettenmaier, Jesse Sylvia, David Williams, Paul Volpe, Andy Frankenberger, Naoya Kihara, and Jake Cody were just a small sample size of those to hit the rail.

While those players faltered, others were able to build their stacks, bob and weave their way through the field, and bag up chips in order to return for Day 2. Some of those returning for Day 2 include Keven Stammen (112,800), Stewart Newman (101,500), Matt Silva (90,700), Ami Allibay (88,000), Bryan Piccioli (85,000), Rex Clinkscales (52,700), 2010 WSOP Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel (45,200), Ting Ho (44,400), Shannon Shorr (43,900), Calvin Anderson (42,400), Yevgeniy Timoshenko (39,700), and Rob Salaburu ( 23,400).

Chip-leader Hobson found a big chunk of chips late in the day when he four-bet a hand preflop holding {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. His opponent called the four-bet and the flop brought {7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Hobson's opponent instantly shipped all in and Hobson called. His opponent meekly showed {k-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Hobson was able to hold.

Also returning for Day 2 is Matt Salsberg. Salsberg was able fight through play and finally found his key doubled up hand late in the evening. It began when he opened to an unknown amount from the cutoff only to have the button three-bet to 3,800. The small blind four-bet and Salsberg five-bet shipped all in. The button folded and the blind announced a call.

Salsberg: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Opponent: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

A run out of {4-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{5-Clubs} ensured that Salsberg would still continue to be a force to be reckoned with in this tournament.

Play will resume in the Amazon Room at 1:00 PM local time. The field is just nine eliminations from the money so the bubble will approach rapidly. Be sure to tune in to PokerNews tomorrow as we play through the bubble and beyond!

Anderson Stays Aggressive

[user250068] • Level 10: 400-800, 100 ante

The action folded to Calvin Anderson in the cutoff and he raised to 1,600. The big blind called and a flop of {a-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} was dealt. The big blind led out for 1,500 and Anderson called.

The big blind checked called Anderson's bet of 2,000 on the {9-Clubs} turn.

The big blind checked the {5-Spades} river and she was faced with a bet of 4,000 from Anderson. After some banter and a promise from Anderson to show one, the big blind folded. Anderson showed the {7-Clubs} to the dismay of his opponent.

Smith Still In

• Level 10: 400-800, 100 ante

Mark "Pegasus" Smith called a bet of 1,600 preflop in the cutoff with {2-Hearts}{2-Spades}. The board came {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs} and his opponent bet 2,000. Smith felt his pocket 2's were good and made the called. Both players checked the turn {7-Diamonds} and the river {3-Clubs}. Smith's 2's were good and he picked up some much needed chips. Smith is sitting with a slightly below average stack of 25,000.
