Sexton Stands Firm

[user66118]

This Mike Sexton character knows his way around a poker table. We followed this hand beginning on fourth street, Owais Ahmed was the third player in the hand.

Sexton: (x-x) / {5-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {10-Hearts} / (x)
Ahmed: (x-x) / {3-Diamonds} {7-Hearts} {4-Spades} {10-Clubs} / (x)
Opponent: (x-x) / {7-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades} / (x)

On fourth, Sexton bet and was called in both places. It checked through on fifth, and Mr. Opponent bet sixth and seventh streets. Ahmed folded on sixth, but Sexton would not fold. On the river, he spent a long while considering the last bet before making the call.

Sexton: {A-Spades} {K-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} / {5-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {4-Clubs} {10-Hearts}
Opponent: {9-Spades} {3-Spades} {3-Hearts} / {7-Spades} {2-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}

"Nice call, sir," the opponent acknowledged. His lowly pair of threes were no good, and Sexton's not-quite-as-lowly fives took the whole pot.

It Doesn't Get Much Tougher Than Table 405

Chad_Holloway • Level 9: 600-1,200, 100 ante

There are 24 tables being utilized here in the Orange Section of the Amazon Room, but none host a tougher lineup than Table 405. Seated there is the defending champ, Chris Viox; the Day 1 chip leader, William Carroll; 2007 WSOP Player of the Year Tom Schneider; bracelet winner John Monnette and Michael Chow; and Chris Klodnicki, who recently won a televised poker tournament. Here's a look at the complete lineup at Table 405:

Seat 1: Chris Viox
Seat 2: William Carroll
Seat 3: John Monnette
Seat 4: Patricia Henderson
Seat 5: Chris Klodnicki
Seat 6: Michael Chow
Seat 7: Tom Schneider
Seat 8: Daniel Ratigan

Greenstein Sent Packing

Barry Greenstein
Barry Greenstein

We caught the action on sixth street when Jimmy Fricke had fired out a bet and was called by Barry Greenstein.

Greenstein: (x-x-x) / {8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Fricke: {4-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} / {8-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{6-Spades}

Fricke fired yet again on seventh and Greenstein made the call, leaving himself just 1,000 behind. Fricke rolled over his hole cards for an eight-high straight and a low, which was good as Greenstein simply mucked. The latter was eliminated a few hands later.

Good Game, Baby

[user66118]
Scotty Nguyen
Scotty Nguyen

We walked up to Scotty Nguyen's table to see him involved in a pot for his tournament life.

Nguyen: (x-x) / {7-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {K-Spades} / (x)
Opponent: (x-x) / {6-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} / (x)

Nguyen bet fifth street as we approached, and his 700-chip bet on sixth street was all he had left.

When the call came, neither man had a made hand.

Nguyen: ({4-Spades} {3-Diamonds}) / {7-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {K-Spades} / (x)
Opponent: ({2-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}) / {6-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} / (x)

Nguyen was ahead with just ace-king high, but Mr. Opponent was drawing to the world for the knockout.

On seventh, Mr. Opponent pulled the {4-Diamonds} to make a pair, and Nguyen's {J-Clubs} left him with no pair, no chips, and an empty beer bottle. His day is done.

Warning!

[user66118] • Level 9: 600-1,200, 100 ante

Well, it's been an eventful restart for Event #4 already.

About two minutes into play, the "Rio Early Alert" alarm system was activated. There are currently bright strobes flashing all over the room, and there's a woman's voice making some loud, pre-recorded announcement over the loud speakers.

Nobody moved a muscle when the alarm went off. We've got some poker to play here, lady!

Cards Flying

Carroll, Mizrachi & Zaichenko Frontrunners on Push to the Money

Mike Sexton looks to improve on last year's performance.

Welcome to Day 2 of the Event #4 $1,500 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low 8-or Better, the first Stud event of the 2012 World Series of Poker. Yesterday, 622 players packed the Amazon Room and created an $839,700 prize pool, with $201,559 of that going to first. More than two-thirds of the field hit the rail, but William Carroll, Michael Mizrachi and Anrey Zaichenko were not among them as the triumvirate finished atop the chip counts.

Others among the 198 players who will be returning to action today are the defending champ, Chris Viox; last year’s runner up, Mike Sexton; 1998 Main Event champ Scotty Nguyen; 2006 WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Madsen; and the one and only Phil Ivey.

The plan for the day is to play ten levels, and given the average stack is around twelve big bets, we expect the eliminations to come fast and furious. The top 64 finishers are slated to be paid, earning a minimum of $2,754, which means 134 players will leave empty handed.

Here’s a look at the top ten chip counts at the start of Day 2:
