Day 1b of the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $5,300 Main Event came to a close following eight levels of play on Saturday. Nearly 700 entries were tallied on the day, and under 500 of them advanced to Day 2. With registration open until the start of Day 2, the numbers of entries should climb and the final total will be available on Sunday, along with the prize pool.

Russia's Alexandr Komarov led the way after Day 1b, bagging up 168,100 in chips. He was trailed closely by the USA's Jonathan Jaffe with 164,000 in chips and Randy Kritzer with 161,500, but no one was able to top Toby Lewis' 188,000 from Day 1a.

Plenty of players were in action on Day 1b, and the likes of Harrison Gimbel, Ankush Mandavia, Aaron Massey, Mike Leah, Maurice Hawkins, and Joe Kuether were all eliminated. On the flip side, Team PokerStars Pro members Daniel Negreanu and Jason Mercier bagged up chips, but they both finished on the shorter end.

Day 2 will commence at 12 p.m. local time on Sunday, and you can find continued coverage right here on PokerNews.com.

Preflop Takedowns

• Level 8: 300-600, 75 ante
  • Ofer Zvi Stern is sitting at about double the starting stack. On this hand there was a raise to 1,500 and two callers before Stern made it 6,000. One by one, his opponents tossed their hands into the much giving him the pot preflop.
  • Sasha Barrese successfully defended her big blind against a lot of preflop action. A player in early position raised to 600 and two players called before Barry Greenstein reraised from the small blind to 2,800. Barrese didn't waste much time before reraising to 7,000 and taking down the pot.
  • Dylan Linde was able to defend his big blind as well. His opponent limped the small blind and Linde made it 2,000, which turned out to be too much for his opponent and he took down the small pot.

Trip Aces for Khun

[user68268] • Level 8: 300-600, 75 ante

From early position, Wade Townsend raised to 1,200. Chanracy Khun called on the button, and the flop came down {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}. Townsend fired 1,400, and Khun called.

The turn was the {6-Spades}, and both players checked to see the {5-Diamonds} land on the river. Townsend checked, and Khun bet 3,800. Townsend tanked for a little bit, then called, and Khun turned up the {A-Spades}{J-Clubs} for three aces. Townsend mucked.

Goldberg Triples Up

• Level 7: 250-500, 50 ante

Gregory Goldberg just tripled up when his pocket tens held against the {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds} of his opponent.

His opponent opened the action with a raise to 1,100. The next player to act called before Goldberg shoved for his last 6,200.

The player to his left reraised to 12,000 and the original raiser five-bet putting in a stack of 5,000 chips, roughly about 80,000. The remaining players folded, leaving Goldberg all in with the five-bettor.

Goldberg had {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} up against {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. The board ran out {8-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Goldberg tripled up. He will still need some work to get back to even the starting stack, but this is a good start.
